Asbestos Injury

Exposure to asbestos fibers can lead to asbestos injury. This can later lead to asbestosis, asbestos cancer called mesothelioma and other forms of health risks. The patient suffers from serious financial as well as health risks due to injuries from asbestos. When a person is exposed high levels of asbestos for prolonged periods of time, the inevitable surfaces. The person has no knowledge that he is being affected by the asbestos fibers. To get compensation and justice for the suffering, assistance is needed from mesothelioma attorneys.

High risk occupations:

An injury due to asbestos is caused in many occupations that are considered at a high risk of inflicting the injury. Workers in factories for automotive ventures, shipping companies, construction sites and many other industries dealing with asbestos are at the greatest risk. Asbestos fibers are very tiny and cannot be seen with the naked eye. Unless seen microscopically they are hard to detect and can be inhaled without the person’s knowledge. They have a latency period of up to 50 years and these fibers don’t even smell.

Workers bring these fibers home as it clings to their hair, shoes as well as clothes, thus passing the fibers to the family members as well. Those at a Mesothelioma risk can take the help of an attorney who can legally help victims of asbestos injury. The attorney helps the person to get compensated if there is serious danger of contracting the injury. To manage and treat this kind of an injury is expensive as well as fatal. It can lead to disability or death of the person caused due to asbestosis, cancer and other related diseases. To prevent it, it is crucial to come up with ways of fiscal help.

Preventing exposure:

One way of prevention, is to be exposed to asbestos fiber up to only 0.1 fibers per cc – eight hours per day. To implement such kind of ruling, the government implements very strict guidelines that need to be adhered to. Another option is to ban the use of asbestos all over the world. This can definitely reduce the number of people getting affected with asbestos. Even now there are number of people being affected by asbestos fiber being reported.

It becomes inevitable to hire the services of a qualified Mesothelioma attorney to handle more complicated cases to make sure that proper compensation is received by the affected person and family members. Justice needs to be demanded by a person inflicted with asbestos injury and injuries which lead to cancer of esophagus, pancreas, colon, lungs and kidneys. You can start the process of healing by hiring a good Mesothelioma attorney.

Cancer and asbestosis are injuries due to constant high levels of exposure in the work environment. Even if someone has been exposed to asbestos are far back as the 1940s, he or she is still susceptible to asbestos injury 50 years later.

Risks due to asbestos exposure:

Those working in the construction industry are particularly at a higher risk. Those working in shipyard industries, building, automotive, mining, railroad and other asbestos related industries, are also at great risk of contracting asbestos injury. Even the loved ones are put at risk when workers return home after being exposed to an asbestos fiber environment bringing home the fibers on their skin, shoes, hair, clothes etc. Without placing limits on permissible exposure levels, preventing an asbestos injury will not be possible. No worker should be exposed to more than 0.1 fibers per cc in eight hours. Many other laws exist today to help prevent exposure to asbestos fiber.

When a person is exposed to dangerous levels of asbestos, asbestos injury occurs. Asbestosis is one such disease that can potentially lead to disability or even death. Scarring of the lower lobes of both lungs is caused when asbestos fibers are inhaled. The lungs elasticity impedes the scar tissue and gas exchange functions get lowered. Due to the long latency period asbestos injury can worsen, if there is no proper monitoring and treatment involved.

Mesothelioma is a deadly cancerous disease, which attacks lining of tissue organs. Peritoneal lining of organs in the abdominal cavity or pleural lining of the lungs are affected by the asbestos fiber. As the disease remains dormant for years, detection becomes difficult and it also has poor prognosis. Once diagnosis is done, and severe injury is detected, it becomes very difficult for the person to survive even more than a year.

Pancreas, kidney, colon , larynx, esophagus and lungs are the other organs that can be affected by asbestos fiber. The risk is seven times more in developing lung cancer. Still there are organizations and companies that continue to endanger their workers with exposure to asbestos fiber, thus causing them asbestos injury. Victims of such an injury have legal rights to hire an attorney and seek legal compensation for their suffering.

Asbestos Floor Removal

Exposure to asbestos brings on a number of fatal ailments. The fibers are hazardous to health and the world over today there are precautionary measures being put into place to reduce the exposure. The most life threatening factor is that inhalation or ingestion of the asbestos fibers only manifest in symptoms decades later. In most of the cases the resultant cancer reaches its final stages and compensation is the only way out then. The material was widely used previously in every segment of homes and commercial applications.

It was mainly for insulation and fireproofing purposes that asbestos which is a strong fire resistant fiber was widely used in the past. Asbestos fiber was easily swallowed or inhaled by a large number of workers which lead to serious diseases like asbestosis which makes breathing extremely difficult due to chronic disease of the lungs, as well as other cancers. This is one reason why more and more people are concerned about asbestos floor removal from older buildings.

Asbestos is contained in vinyl floor tiles and need to be handled with utmost care while being removed. It is necessary to ensure that the material is in a state which is non-friable. A non friable state means that due to hand pressure, the material cannot be reduced to dust. Should the vinyl tiles be smashed or damaged, non friable asbestos can become friable, which results in freeing harmful asbestos fibers. It is not at all an easy task removing these tiles.

Preparation for the procedure:

In the asbestos floor removal procedure, you need to follow a few steps. The first thing is to comply with the Asbestos removal Code, as part of the preparation of asbestos floor removal. Boundaries needed in the removal process need to be determined. You need to make the place secure by putting barriers and signs in the areas, disallowing others to enter into it. To prevent asbestos from entering into the ventilation ducts, you must seal off the air conditioning and ventilation ducts. Make use of portable work lights which are grounded and wired to an outside circuit in case you need lighting in the area, for safety measures.

Also to be kept handy is personal protective equipment which includes a respirator with dual cartridges, gloves, HEPA filters, protective clothing, coverings for the head, boots etc. There are a number of tools required for preventing asbestos from becoming airborne. Putty knives, a 2-3 gallon tank sprayer, plastic sheeting, disposal bags, step ladders, duct tape, sealant, liquid detergent etc. are the tools required for asbestos floor removal.  Plastic sheeting must be used on floors and walls and with a duct tape everything should be sealed off to contain the work area.

Procedure:

Amended water should be used to wet the asbestos containing material. Amended water means water mixed with a liquid detergent. The worksite should be first prepared for the job and materials should be arranged. The contaminated area should never be water blasted. The asbestos fibers need to be kept intact in the material, so that they are not inhaled. Once the material is soaked you can start scrapping off the asbestos containing material. Avoid breaking up the material as you could still ingest some of the asbestos fibers. Leave it intact after carefully scrapping all the material. When this process is done the material should remained soaked in water. You may have to call an expert for the asbestos floor removal job if you are not confident in doing it.

Disposal:

Special disposable bags including disposable coveralls are available to keep the scraped off material secured. Scrapped material should be double wrapped and double bagged.  Keep it in a special bin as it is illegal to place asbestos in domestic garbage bins. It is important to mention the contents of waste material and label the bag. The local council assigns designated landfills for disposing asbestos waste. Keep a copy of the receipts in case you hire the services of a company to dispose the asbestos waste.

Asbestos floor removal should be done with care and precaution. Safety glasses and a respirator are protective gear are very necessary to prevent poor vision and harder breathing. It is not at all safe to drill, saw and grind the material while attempting to remove the asbestos contaminant. There are number of licensed asbestos abatement contractors who are educated about the process and are fully equipped for disposing asbestos. To stop the asbestos particles from moving freely they usually come to the site with armed plastic sheets. It is a serious business to safely remove asbestos floor tiles so ensure that the work is done with great precaution. There are a number of online as well as offline resources that help with the removal of the hazardous and life threatening material. A little research goes a long way.

Asbestos Exposure

It is due to ingestion or inhalation of asbestos fibers that asbestos exposure related health effects occur. Standards to limit exposure have been set by The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to reduce the ill effects of diseases related to asbestos. Asbestos basically appears naturally in a fibrous form and is a class of minerals. It was extensively used from the 1940s to the 1980s. Extensive use was made in ship building material, roofing material components used in the auto manufacturing industry, building material and many other avenues.

Mine workers and those living close to the mines, those involved in ship building directly, ship breakers, construction site workers, building renovators, servicing and manufacturing of brake and auto clutch assemblies are at maximum risk of asbestos exposure. The fibers cannot be seen with the naked eye and being microscopic, they get firmly lodged in the lungs when inhaled constantly. It takes anywhere from 15 years of the first exposure to show up and let you know that you have been affected. Mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis are some of the dreadful diseases caused by exposure to asbestos fiber.

Standards set for exposure to asbestos:

The time in which the standards for the limitations on asbestos exposure were set was in the 1970s. It was during this time that the ill effects of inhalation of asbestos were noticed. As of today, most of the clutch assemblies, brake assemblies for the auto industry, ship building material, building material, manufacture of pipes, do not contain asbestos fiber. But it is still present in large amounts in a host of other products, previous constructions, ships that are broken up for scrap, old pipelines, tiles and roofing etc.

There is a big risk of asbestos inhalation amongst miners even today.  The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) authorities have constantly been setting standards for the permissible exposure limit to asbestos. The first comprehensive standard was set in 1972 by OSHA. It regulated the permissible asbestos exposure limit to an eight hour exposure, time weighed average of 2 fibers for every cc of air, with a maximum ceiling of 10 fibers at a time. In mid 1976, these standards came into full effect.

To this day regulations regarding control of inhalation of asbestos like constant monitoring of air, employee training with regards to health risks, regular medical checkups, equipment required for protection are being set and followed. To give maximum protection to workers in asbestos hazard areas it was decided universally that the 2 fibers per cc count must be reduced. Some of the previous regulations were scrapped.

Using engineering controls, specific protective equipment, specific training to workers, good work practices were different ways of reducing the presence of asbestos in the air. To help protect the workers better, in mid 1990s, a new se of standards were set, and many industries became fully compliant with them. To attain the set levels, many regulations were modified. Employers now have to provide latest equipment to their workers, adequate training regarding the ill effects and health hazards of asbestos, implications of exposure to asbestos, etc. To minimize inhalation and exposure to asbestos, specific rules have to be followed.

Reducing risk of asbestos exposure:

To prevent the spread of asbestos fiber outside the workplace, to reduce the risk of asbestos exposure and to maintain minimum asbestos levels there are quite a few considerations that need to be made. Wearing protective clothing and that too provided by the employer himself is one way of prevention. You can change into your normal clothing while leaving the hazardous area. For specialized protective clothing as well as the normal clothing, separate lockers need to be used. Authorized persons for the purpose of laundering or disposal can take the clothing out of the work area. Air filtration systems need to be used in lunch rooms to keep the place free from asbestos fibers .

Prevention is better than cure:

The lunch room can be kept free of asbestos exposure by using air filtration systems. Protective clothing should be worn while entering the canteen. Hands should be always washed and/or a shower before changing into normal clothing. If there is an area that contains asbestos fibers, avoid eating, smoking, chewing tobacco, gum, applying cosmetics etc in that space. At regular intervals get a physical check up done. Employers can provide clothing and compliant respirators to employees in addition to the engineering controls used. All these precautions will help in minimizing the risk of asbestos inhalation. Even your family members are protected against the hazards associated with the fibers. Research and awareness are all around. It helps to remain well informed and alert to prevent the onset of some devastating inevitability. Asbestos is banned and exposure and the aftermath are now issues that can be legally addressed. Taking a well informed decision helps a lot.
